Our Story
Ponchos Tacos was born from a deep connection to Mexican food, culture, and tradition. Founded by Alfonso, raised in Toronto to Mexican parents, Ponchos brings together two places he has always called home — Toronto and Mexico.
Inspired by the taquerías he grew up visiting in Mexico, before opening Ponchos Alfonso spent two years exploring over 100 taquerías, drawing inspiration from each to shape his own vision. Along the way, he spent four months in Monterrey training across four restaurants, learning firsthand from experienced taqueros and refining the craft that would eventually become Ponchos Tacos.
In June 2025, Ponchos began as a catering business, with Alfonso personally handling everything from recipe development to cooking and serving. After more than 70 events, the dream of opening a permanent taquería became a reality.
In 2026, Ponchos found its first home at 646 Queen Street West. Inspired by northern Mexico, our taquería celebrates traditional cooking techniques, quality ingredients, fresh salsas, and tacos served straight from the trompo.
Named after Poncho, the Mexican nickname for Alfonso, Ponchos is a tribute to his heritage and the city he grew up in.
Rooted in Mexico. Made for Toronto.
